  • PISCATAWAY, NJ - Freshman Jessica Crosby (Sedro-Woolley, WA) pitched her second consecutive complete-game shutout as the Rutgers softball team (19-22; 3-7 BIG EAST) defeated Connecticut (17-17; 2-6 BIG EAST), 5-0, in game two of a doubleheader on April 17. UConn was victorious in game one 2-0.

RU took a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game two. Senior Megan Antonucci (Warrington, PA) singled to start off the inning and beat out the throw to second as junior Helen Smith (Tucson, AZ) reached on a fielder’s choice. With two runners on and no one out, senior Nikki Childress (Roanoke, VA) ripped her 10th home run of the year over the left field fence to get the Scarlet Knights on the board. The home run was the 18th of Childress’ career and made her the all-time leader in school history, passing Sharron Morris (1993-96).

Crosby (2-2) raised her scoreless-inning streak to 12 as she struck out three while allowing only three hits to earn her second win of the year. She did some of her best work in the sixth when, with two outs, the Huskies drew a pair of walks and loaded the bases on an error. Crosby worked out of the jam as she struck out Suzy de Bary swinging to end the UConn threat.

The Scarlet Knights added two unearned runs in the sixth to up the lead to 5-0. Antonucci went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and junior Stephanie Johannsen (Penn Valley, CA) went 2-for-2 with a walk.

UConn starter Jessica Gurney (12-8) went the distance in game one, allowing only five hits and striking out five in the Huskies’ 2-0 win. Connecticut got on the board in the first when Maggie Arbogast singled through the right side to bring home Mandy Schettini to make it 1-0. UConn added another run in the second to make it 2-0 on an RBI-groundout by Jen Ward.

Sophomore Christina Gillman (Valencia, CA) relieved starter Brielle Cosentino (Carlstadt, NJ) (8-5) in the second inning and was stellar in relief. She retired the first 12 batters she faced and allowed only four hits in 5.2 innings of scoreless relief. Smith went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles for the Scarlet Knights.

The Scarlet Knights will host Boston College in a BIG EAST doubleheader tomorrow, Sunday, April 18, at noon.
