  • PISCATAWAY, NJ - Senior Brielle Cosentino (Carlstadt, NJ) hurled a three-hit shutout in Rutgers’ 1-0 win over BIG EAST leader Villanova (16-13; 7-1 BIG EAST) on April 10 to spoil the Wildcats’ perfect conference record. In game one, Nova defeated the Scarlet Knights (17-20; 2-6 BIG EAST) 9-2.

Cosentino (8-4) retired the final 10 batters she faced and recorded her second complete-game victory of the week in the 1-0 win for Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights got all the offense they would need when senior Nikki Childress (Roanoke, VA) ripped a 3-2 pitch over the left field fence in the fourth to give RU the 1-0 lead.

With nine home runs this year, Childress now owns the single-season home run record, breaking the record she and teammate Crystal Vargas (Jersey City, NJ) set last season. With her 17 career home runs, Childress is now tied with Sharron Morris (1993-96) for first on the school’s all-time list.

Villanova appeared to have taken a 1-0 lead in the third when Vargas made a diving catch on a Ricci Lugo liner to center and Robin Flier tagged at third and scored. On appeal, the umpire ruled that Flier had left early and called her out to end the inning.

In game one, Villanova scored two runs in the third and never looked back on the way to a 9-2 victory. Wildcat starter Shannon Williams (12-7), who authored a perfect game against Drexel on Thursday, allowed only two hits and one run while striking out eight in 6.1 IP.

Rutgers got on the board in the fourth when junior Helen Smith (Tucson, AZ), who registered one of the two Rutgers hits in the game, scored from third on a wild pitch to cut the Villanova lead to 2-1. The Wildcats would go on to score two more in the sixth and five in the seventh and were led by Flier, who went 4-for-4 with a double and three RBI in the game. RU starter Leah Black (Rocky River, OH) (6-9) took the loss after giving up eight runs over six innings.

The Scarlet Knights will return to the field on Tuesday, April 13, when they host Rider for a doubleheader at 3:00 p.m.
