  • CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA -On day two of the Cavalier Classic in Charlottesville, VA, Rutgers (9-10) lost a seventh-inning lead and fell in extra innings to Youngstown State, 5-3, but rebounded to defeat Campbell, 4-1, in its second game on March 20.

The Scarlet Knights carried a 2-1 lead into the seventh inning against Youngstown State (12-7), but the Penguins got a one-out, RBI-double from Amanda Berry to tie the game and force extra innings. Rutgers regained the lead in the top of the eighth when senior Nichole Cruz (Bremerton, WA) singled home senior Nicole Casey (Churchville, PA) to put Rutgers on top 3-2. Youngstown State tied the game in the bottom half of the inning and took the win on a two-run, walk-off home run off the bat of Char Kudlock.

Freshman Jessica Crosby (Sedro-Woolley, WA) started for the Scarlet Knights but lasted only three innings before giving way to senior Brielle Cosentino (Carlstadt, NJ) (3-3), who pitched the final 4.2 innings and took the loss. Youngstown State starter Kelly Murphy (5-4) pitched a complete game and kept the Scarlet Knight batters off-balance all day long after a shaky first inning in which she let up a pair of runs.

Cruz finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while senior Brittney Neer (Tallahassee, FL) went 1-for-3 with a run scored and her second triple of the year.

Sophomore Christina Gillman (Valencia, CA) and senior Leah Black (Rocky River, OH) combined to allow only three hits and one run in RU’s 4-1 win over Campbell (15-14). Gillman pitched four innings and raised her record to 2-1, while Black recorded her first save of the year.

The Scarlet Knights got on the board in the second when junior Jenny Card (Miami, FL) crushed a triple to deep right field to bring home senior Nikki Childress (Roanoke, VA) and junior Stephanie Johannsen (Penn Valley, CA). Card then scored when Gillman helped her own cause with a single up the middle to make it 3-0. Neer, Cruz and junior Helen Smith (Tucson, AZ) all finished the game with two hits.

Rutgers will play LaSalle tomorrow, Sunday, March 21, at 11:00 a.m. and a team yet to be determined at 1:00 p.m. in the final game of the tournament.
