PISCATAWAY, N.J. (June 5, 2014) – Rutgers softball rising seniors Jackie Bates (Lincroft, N.J.) and Chandler Howard (Wilmington, Del.) each received another honor Wednesday following spectacular 2014 campaigns, as the outfield pair was named to the 2014 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) All-Star Second Team.

Bates and Howard were also named to the 2014 NFCA Division I All-Mideast Region First Team last month, while Bates was selected to the All-American Athletic Conference First Team and Howard was named to the league’s second team at the conclusion of the regular season.

Howard and Bates paced Rutgers at the plate last season, hitting in the second and third spot, respectively. Bates led the Scarlet Knights with a .390 batting average, 16 doubles, 40 RBIs and a .685 slugging percentage, and tied Howard with the team home runs lead with nine.

Bates, RU’s starting center fielder in all 47 games, notched 15 multi-hit outings and tied Howard with a team-leading 10 multi-RBI games. Bates also posted the third longest hitting streak among RU players (10) and closed the season by reaching base in 30 consecutive contests. Bates’ on-base mark of .483 led the team.

Howard, meanwhile, finished just behind her outfield counterpart with a .389 batting average, leading the squad with 63 hits and tying for the team lead with nine home runs. Her 36 runs led the Scarlet Knights, while she finished second with nine doubles, 29 RBIs and a .623 slugging percentage. Howard’s 20 multi-hit games led the team. The left fielder posted a pair of long hitting streaks last season, including spans of 12 and 13 games.

The voting was completed by the head coaches within the ECAC Division I Softball membership. To view the full list of ECAC All-Stars, click here.
