PROVIDENCE, R.I. (April 28, 2014) – A pair of Rutgers (25-16, 8-7 American) softball rookies led the charge in a 4-0 week for the Scarlet Knights, as freshmen Carly Todd (Deptford, N.J.) and Shayla Sweeney (Barrington, N.J.) were named to the American Athletic Conference Honor Roll, the league announced Monday.
The weekly honors were the first for both players, as each played key roles in RU’s sweep of UConn (April 26-27) and 13-3 rout of St. John’s (April 23).
Todd went 5-for-10 (.500) with three runs, eight RBIs and two home runs, with both four-baggers coming in RU’s series finale vs. UConn. The designated player hit a solo shot to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh as part of a back-to-back sequence that started with sophomore Melanie Slowinski (Severn, Md.). Todd then stepped to the plate with the bases juiced an inning later, driving the ball over the center field wall for the 7-3 win.
Sweeny improved to 8-7 with a 3-0 week that featured a 1.08 ERA. She made two starts, picking up her first win of the week against St. John’s (April 23). Sweeney followed that performance up with a complete game against UConn before tossing 2.0 innings of relief in the season finale to pick up the win.
The selections of Todd and Sweeney mark the third consecutive week a Rutgers player earned a conference distinction, as junior Jackie Bates (Lincroft, N.J.) made the honor roll on April 14 for the third time this year and freshman Stephanie Huang (Paramus, N.J.) and junior Chandler Howard (Wilmington, Del.) earned conference honors on April 21.
Huang was selected to the honor roll while Howard became the second player to earn the Player of the Week award this season after senior Loren Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) Juniors Alyssa Landrith (Vacaville, Calif.) and Howard both made the honor roll on March 17.
RU welcomes LIU-Brooklyn to Piscataway, N.J. for a Wednesday matchup set for 4 p.m. The game marks the squad’s final home contest of the season.
