PROVIDENCE, R.I. (April 21, 2014) – With a walk-off home run against Memphis (April 18) and a .500 batting average in three games over the weekend, Rutgers softball junior Chandler Howard (Wilmington, Del.) was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. Joining her with her first-career conference honor was sophomore Stephanie Huang (Paramus, N.J.), who became the fourth Scarlet Knight to make the Weekly Honor Roll this season.
The selections make it three weeks in a row that a Rutgers player was honored by the conference. Howard joins senior Loren Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) (Feb. 17) as the only other RU player to earn Player of the Week honors this season. Feb. 17.
Howard hit a two-run walk-off homer to seal a 3-1 win in eight innings against Memphis in the series-opener and followed up with a three-run blast in the 14-2 rout of the Tigers in the second game. Her five RBIs were tied for a team-high over the three games.
Howard’s eight homers this season – a team-high – are the most for a Rutgers player since former standout Brittney Lindley hit 13 in 2011 to reset the school’s single-season record. Her total is tied with three others for the third-most home runs in the last 10 seasons.
Huang led the Scarlet Knights with a .600 batting average (6-for-10) in three games, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs in the 14-2 win over Memphis Friday. She is third on the team with a .366 batting average.
Junior Jackie Bates (Lincroft, N.J.) made the conference honor roll for the third time this season last week (April 14) after being selected on April 7 and March 24. Juniors Alyssa Landrith (Vacaville, Calif.) and Howard both made the honor roll on March 17.
RU welcomes former conference rival St. John’s to Piscataway for a 4 p.m. meeting on Wednesday, April 23. The Scarlet Knights dropped two of three games last season against the Red Storm in Queens, N.Y.
