  • CLEARWATER, FL - Rutgers relinquished a two-run lead in the fifth inning and was never able to recover in a 7-2 loss to Temple (5-8) on March 6. The loss dropped the Scarlet Knights (5-6) to fourth in their pool at the Speedline Invitational.

Freshman pitcher Jessica Crosby (Sedro-Woolley, WA) was in control through four innings with a 2-0 lead, but she allowed three runs with one out in the fifth before giving way to sophomore Christina Gillman (Valencia, CA), who retired the final two batters without any further damage. The big blow in the inning was a two-run, ground rule double to deep left by Laura Gutscher.

Temple added four more in the sixth on only one hit and a pair of Rutgers throwing errors that allowed the Owls to score three unearned runs and put the game out of reach heading into the seventh.

The Scarlet Knights got on the board first, taking a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning. Junior Helen Smith (Tucson, AZ) dribbled a single down the third-base line with one out and her pinch runner, senior Nicole Casey (Churchville, PA), moved to second on a single by senior Megan Antonucci (Warrington, PA).

With runners on first and second and one out, junior Stephanie Johannsen (Penn Valley, CA) belted a double to the gap in left to bring both runners home, but she was gunned down attempting to move to third base. Johannsen finished the game 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

Rutgers appeared to have taken a 1-0 lead in the third when freshman Maggie Geraldi (Russell, IL) crossed the plate on a Brittney Neer (Tallahassee, FL) sacrifice fly, but Temple appealed to the home plate umpire, and he ruled that she had left early, thus ending the inning and erasing the Rutgers run.

The Scarlet Knights will face Mercer in the fourth-place semifinal game at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 7.
