Scarlet Knights, Pirates meet in first game since 2012

  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 31, 2014) – The Rutgers softball team heads up the New Jersey Turnpike on Tuesday, April 1 to face former BIG EAST rival Seton Hall at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Field in South Orange, N.J. The Scarlet Knights and Pirates have not faced off since the 2012 season.

    The squad's game against Seton Hall will begin at 6 p.m. and be broadcast live on the Pirate Sports Network. A  subscription is required. 

    Rutgers (13-10, 1-2 AAC) last played on Thursday, March 27 at the RU Softball Complex, splitting a doubleheader with visiting Hofstra. The Scarlet Knights’ home-opening American Athletic Conference series against USF from March 29-30 was canceled due to inclement weather. The team has had a total of eight games this season canceled due to inclement weather.

    RU has been impressive from the plate through 23 games this season, rivaling some of the best team marks over the last 10 years. RU’s .296 batting average, .411 slugging percentage and .378 on-base percentage are the second-best marks since 2004.

    Junior Chandler Howard (Wilmington, Del.) has been on fire of late and rides a 10-game hitting streak into the week, hitting .514 with four doubles, a triple, two home runs, eight RBIs, 11 runs scored and an .838 slugging percentage in that span. Howard has tallied seven multi-hit games during the streak and slapped three hits twice.

    Scouting Seton Hall

    Seton Hall enters the matchup at 9-20 overall after sweeping Providence in its BIG EAST-opening series from March 22-23 in South Orange, N.J. The Pirates have lost three of four before the conference sweep, which included a 5-0 shutout and an 11-3 win in five innings (March 22) over the Friars.

    Leading the squad at the plate is Yasmin Harrell, who is hitting a scorching .365 with 31 hits to lead the team. Behind her are four other Pirates with averages above .300, including the squad’s leader in home runs – Meredith Henze (seven) – and SHU’s leader in RBIs – Danielle Destaso (18).

    From the circle, Jen Metzger leads the team with a 4-3 record and 4.59 ERA. All four of the Pirates pitchers have tossed at least one complete game this season.

    Series Information

    The Scarlet Knights and Pirates will meet on the diamond for the first time since the 2012 season. RU swept SHU, its former BIG EAST rival, in a doubleheader on March 28, 2012. Rutgers took the first game, 1-0, before exploding for an 11-5 win in Game Two.

    RU has won the last five meetings against its in-state rival and leads the all-time series, 43-21.
