LOUISVILLE, Ky. (March 23, 2014) –The Rutgers softball team dropped an 11-3 contest against Louisville in the series finale Sunday at Ulmer Stadium, moving the Scarlet Knights to 12-9 on the season and 1-2 in American Athletic Conference play.
The Cardinals allowed a combined three runs and five hits to RU in the contest, the Scarlet Knights’ lowest run total since being held scoreless on March 2 against Portland State.
The game remained scoreless through the first two innings of play before Rutgers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Junior Jackie Bates (Lincroft, N.J.) singled up the middle to plate senior Loren Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) and sophomore Liz Adams (Crystal Lakes, Ill.) and give RU the lead. It was the third-straight game in the series that the Scarlet Knights scored first.
Louisville stormed back in bottom half of the inning with a two-run double from Brittany Duncan, who made it a 3-2 contest after her team tacked on a run earlier in the frame.
Williams tied the game in the top of the fifth inning to make it a 3-3 ballgame courtesy of a wild pitch. But consecutive four-run innings in the bottom of the fifth and sixth by the Cardinals ended the game early and clinched the series for UofL.
Freshman right-hander Shayla Sweeney (Barrington, N.J.) took the loss for RU, going 2.1 innings and allowing six hits, six earned runs and four walks.
The Scarlet Knights return to action on Wednesday, March 26 for their first game of the season at the RU Softball Complex. The squad welcomes Hofstra to Piscataway, N.J. for a doubleheader, beginning at 2:30 p.m.
