  • CLEARWATER, FL - Rutgers (4-4) raised its winning streak to three on a pitching gem by senior Leah Black (Rocky River, OH), defeating Jacksonville, 6-1, before falling to No. 14 Oregon, 6-0, on the opening day of the Speedline Invitational in Clearwater, FL, on March 4.

Black (2-2) went the distance, scattering five hits while striking out six to pick up her second win of the season in the victory over the Dolphins (7-14). Senior Megan Antonucci (Warrington, PA) went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Rutgers offense.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth. Jacksonville’s Kacey Yourus drew a walk to open the inning, stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Dianna Korcak lifted a single to right to bring home Yourus as the Dolphins took a 1-0 lead.

Rutgers answered in the top half of the sixth as junior Helen Smith (Tucson, AZ) lined a one-out single to left. After pinch hitter Maggie Geraldi (Russell, IL) singled to put runners on first and second, Antonucci singled to center to knot the game at 1-1, but Geraldi was thrown out trying to advance to third. Junior Stephanie Johannsen (Penn Valley, CA) walked to move Antonucci to second and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Freshman Jessica Crosby (Sedro-Woolley, WA) continued her hot hitting (.417) with a two-run single to put the Scarlet Knights ahead, 3-1.

Rutgers added three more in the top of the seventh on the strength of a run-scoring wild pitch and a Crystal Vargas (Jersey City, NJ) two-run single.

The Scarlet Knight bats went silent against No. 14 Oregon (14-4) and they could muster only three hits against the Ducks. Oregon chased starter Brielle Cosentino (Carlstadt, NJ) with a five-run, six-hit second inning and Rutgers could never get on track in the game. Crosby pitched the final 4.2 innings and allowed only one run in relief.

On day two of the tournament, Friday, March 5, Rutgers will play Northwestern at 11:00 a.m. and Coastal Carolina at 3:00 p.m.
