  • Junior Chandler Howard hit her second home run of the season in the 10-6 win over Colorado State

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Feb. 16, 2014) –  The Rutgers softball team trailed, 2-0, after two and a half innings of action, but exploded for 10 runs over the next three frames to win, 10-6, Sunday afternoon against Colorado State in the team’s final game at the UTSA Roadrunner Classic.

The Scarlet Knights posted a 3-2 opening weekend in San Antonio, Texas, besting their 2-3 mark last season at the UTSA classic.

Freshman Shayla Sweeney (Barrington, N.J.) earned the victory in a relief effort - the first win of her career. The rookie (1-1) went 2.0 innings and allowed two hits and two earned runs with no walks and no strikeouts.

RU scored its first run of the contest with two outs in the third inning, when sophomore shortstop Melanie Slowinski (Severn, Md.) drew a walk to plate senior rightfielder Loren Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) and make it a 2-1 game. In the very next at-bat, freshman Carly Todd (Deptford, N.J.) recorded her first two RBIs as a Scarlet Knight with a single up the middle. Those runs made it 3-2 RU, as the squad would lead for the remainder of the contest.

RU jumped ahead, 7-2, after a four-run bottom of the fourth, highlighted by a two-RBI double by Slowinski to close out the scoring in the inning. Following a three-run home run by Colorado State’s Chelsea Biglow in the top half of the of a four-run fifth inning, the Scarlet Knights again responded, crossing three runs to reach 10 runs for the first time this season.

An inning-opening walk by sophomore third baseman Jordan Whitley (Clayton, Del.) setup a three-run blast by junior Chandler Howard (Wilmington, Del.) later in the inning – her second of the season.

Williams recorded an early season best 4-for-4 performance in the contest, as she is now 13-for-19 (.684) through five games this season. Two other Scarlet Knights – Howard and Todd – also recorded multi-hit performances on the afternoon, going 2-for-3 and 2-for-4, respectively.

Slowinski and Howard led RU with three RBIs each on the afternoon.

The Scarlet Knights are back in action next weekend in Clearwater, Fla., for the USF Series Collegiate Fast Pitch Softball Tournament. RU’s first game of the tourney will come against James Madison on Friday, Feb. 21 at noon.
