PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Feb. 14, 2014) –  The Rutgers softball team split its first day at the UTSA Roadrunner Classic, falling, 4-2, in a heartbreaker to Colorado State in the first game before topping Wichita State, 9-1, in five innings in the squad’s second game of the afternoon.

Sophomore right-hander Dresden Maddox (Kennesaw, Ga.) guided RU to its first win of the season, going 5.0 innings and allowing just one earned run. She struck out four in the victory.

Offensively, RU (1-1) recorded a whopping 14 hits in the nine-run, five-inning win, including five extra-base hits.

The Scarlet Knights jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning courtesy of a two-run home runs from junior left fielder Chandler Howard (Wilmington, Del.).

Senior right fielder Loren Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) led off the third inning with a solo shot and later in the inning sophomore shortstop Melanie Slowinski (Severn, Md.) notched a two-RBI single to put RU ahead, 6-1. After Rutgers added another run in the fourth inning, Williams knocked in two more runs in the fifth to put RU ahead by the final score of 9-1. She doubled to plate Slowinski and freshman Carly Todd (Deptford, N.J.), sealing the Scarlet Knights first win of the season.

RU fell, 4-2, in a heartbreaking loss to Colorado State in its season-opener. The Scarlet Knights led, 2-0, entering the bottom of the seventh inning and forced the Rams to their final out, but the Rams crossed four runs to walk-off with the win. Colorado State’s Ashilee Ortega tripled to score two runs and tie the game with two outs, before Chelsea O’Conner hit a two-run homer to seal the win.

Junior left-hander Alyssa Landrith (Vacaville, Calif.) took the loss in her first outing of the season. She struck out six and surrendered seven hits and four earned runs.

Williams was the only Scarlet Knight to record double-digit hits in both games, going 2-for-4 against Colorado State and 3-for-4 against Wichita State.

The Scarlet Knights continue their stay in San Antonio, Texas tomorrow, when the team plays Oklahoma State at 3 p.m. and UTSA at 5:30 p.m.
