PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Jan. 31, 2014) – The Rutgers softball team was selected to finish fifth in the 2014 American Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll, the league announced Friday. The Scarlet Knights received 23 points in the voting to finish just behind fourth-place UCF, which garnered 29 points.
No. 19/18 Louisville and No. 25/23 USF finished first and second, respectively, in the voting. Louisville earned six first-place votes and earned 48 points, while USF received one first place vote and earned 44 points. Houston rounded out the top-three with 37 points.
Head coach Jay Nelson will lead RU in its only year in the American Athletic Conference, returning six starters and 11 letterwinners. The Scarlet Knights posted a 30-26 record last season and fell just short of qualifying for the BIG EAST Championships. The 30-win season was the fourth in the program’s 38-year history and first of Nelson’s tenure “On the Banks.”
