  • BOCA RATON, FL - Rutgers (3-3) won an eleven-inning marathon over Eastern Michigan (2-3) to finish in third place at the FAU Tournament in Boca Raton, FL, on Feb. 22.

The teams traded runs in the eighth, ninth and tenth, but Rutgers was able to score a pair with two outs in the eleventh on an RBI triple by senior Brittney Neer (Tallahassee, FL) and a run-scoring single by junior Stephanie Johannsen (Penn Valley, CA) to make it 8-6. Senior Brielle Cosentino (Carlstadt, NJ) held the Eagles scoreless in the bottom half of the inning and pitched the final five innings to earn the victory and raise her record to 2-0. Neer finished the game 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored.

The Scarlet Knights forced the game into extra innings when they battled back to tie it at 3-3 in the ninth. Senior Megan Antonucci (Warrington, PA) opened the inning with a single and moved to third on sacrifice bunts from senior Nichole Cruz (Bremerton, WA) and Neer. She crossed the plate with the tying run on a single through the pitchers legs from Johannsen.

The Eagles had taken a one-run lead in the sixth. With one out, freshman Jessica Crosby (Sedro-Wooley, WA), who relieved starter Christina Gillman (Valencia, CA) in the fifth, issued a walk to Deanna Wisnieski. Wisnieski reached second on a sacrifice bunt and scored the tying run when Lauren Allen singled to deep second. Allen went to second on a wild pitch and scored the go-ahead run on a Carolyn Grutza single up the middle.

RU scored the first runs of the game on an Antonucci two-run home run over the left field fence to give the Scarlet Knights a 2-0 lead in the second. Antonucci went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.EMU closed to within one, 2-1, in the bottom of the third when Wisnieski singled up the middle to plate Katie Grens from third.

The Scarlet Knights will return to Florida in two weeks to participate in the Speedline Invitational Tournament in Clearwater from Thursday to Sunday, March 4-7. BOX SCORE
