  • BOCA RATON, FL - For the second time in three days, Rutgers (2-3) defeated LIU (1-4) at the FAU Tournament on the campus of Florida Atlantic University. The 4-2 victory allowed the Scarlet Knights to move into the third-place game of the tournament against Eastern Michigan at 11:00 a.m. today, Feb. 22.

Senior Leah Black (Rocky River, OH) pitched six strong innings, allowing no earned runs while striking out six to become the Rutgers all time strikeout leader (437). Black raised her record to 1-2 and senior Brielle Cosentino (Carlstadt, NJ) pitched a scoreless seventh to earn her first save of the season.

The Scarlet Knights broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the sixth when junior Helen Smith (Tucson, AZ) hit a ball to deep second to score senior Nikki Childress (Roanoke, VA) from third on a close play at the plate. Childress took out the catcher on the slide, allowing junior Crystal Vargas (Jersey City, NJ) to score from second, making the score 4-2. Childress was 2-for-2 with a run scored and a walk, while Vargas finished the game 1-for-1 with a double, a run scored and a walk.

Rutgers started off the scoring in the second when senior Megan Antonucci (Warrington, PA) singled to right and stole second. She scored on a single from senior Nichole Cruz (Bremerton, WA), who advanced to second on the throw from the outfield. LIU then threw a Brittney Neer (Tallahassee, FL) sacrifice bunt attempt into right field, allowing Cruz to score to make it 2-0.

LIU tied the game 2-2 in the fourth after scoring a pair of unearned runs with two outs.

RU lost 3-1 to its next opponent, EMU (2-2), on Saturday, Feb. 21, on day two of the tournament. BOX SCORE
