BOCA RATON, FL - Despite giving up only one earned run, Rutgers senior Leah Black (Rocky River, OH) (0-2) took the loss as the Scarlet Knights (1-3) fell 2-1 to host Florida Atlantic (10-4) on day two of the FAU Tournament in Boca Raton, FL, on Feb. 21.
FAU took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second after Candice Freel knocked a one-out single to center and Jennifer Cavanaugh followed with a walk. The runners advanced one base on a passed ball and both scored on a Ginny Matthews single to right center.
Rutgers pulled to within one in the top of the fifth. Junior Stephanie Johannsen (Penn Valley, CA) singled between first and second with one out and senior Nichole Cruz (Bremerton, WA) moved her to second with a single down the right field line. Senior Brittney Neer (Tallahassee, FL) ripped a single to left center to bring Johannsen home to make it 2-1.
Rutgers was held to four hits and left six runners on base. Black struck out five to move with two of tying the all-time school record of 433. Earlier in the day, the Scarlet Knights dropped a 3-1 decision to Eastern Michigan.
RU will face LIU tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 22, at 9:00 a.m. The Scarlet Knights beat the Blackbirds 8-0 on Feb. 20. BOX SCORE
