Rutgers Softball Announces Five Early Signees

  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Dec. 11, 2013) – The Rutgers softball team added five early signees, head coach Jay Nelson announced Tuesday. The future Scarlet Knights will join the squad “On the Banks” in 2014, the program’s inaugural season in the Big Ten Conference.

    “The 2014 class is a very strong class for us,” Nelson said. “We have added great offensive threats in this class with both power and speed.”   

    Meaghan Wells
    MIF | 5-4 | R/R
    Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway HS

    Notes: A three-year starter at shortstop at Piscataway HS … recorded a .435 batting average, .371 slugging percentage, .463 OBP, .333 batting average with runners in scoring position and .942 fielding percentage in her career … named to the Middlesex County All-Freshman and All-Sophomore Teams … also started for four years on the varsity soccer squad … a four-year varsity letterwinner on the girls basketball team … member of the National Honor Society with a 3.9 GPA … daughter of Gene and Janet Wells … her father, Gene, ran track at Rutgers, holding the record in the 800-meter dash … has one brother, Brian, who runs for the men’s cross country and track teams … intends to major in plant science … born on Nov. 17, 1995.

    Nelson on Wells: “As utility player Meaghan will strengthen our squad with her athletic ability to play many positions. She has good speed and is a well rounded athlete who will be competing for playing time in her first year.”

    Fairfax, Va./Fairfax HS

    Notes: A three-year varsity starter at Fairfax HS … named first team all-conference three times, and first time all-region twice … placed on academic honor roll twice in four years … also played varsity volleyball for one year, earning all-conference runner-up honors … intends to major in communications and education … daughter Joseph and Susan … her father, Joe, played football at Western Kentucky University, while her uncle, David, and uncle, John, played football at University of Virginia and University of North Carolina, respectively … born on April 11, 1996.

    Nelson on Hall: “Becca hits for power and average. She is a great left-handed hitter who is both a line drive gap hitter with the ability to hit the long ball.”


    Jacqueline Kott
    3B, OF | 5-2 | L/R
    Burlington Township, N.J./Burlington Township HS

    Notes: Started in each of her first three years at Burlington Township HS … named MVP of the Palmyra High School Softball Tournament … led the squad in her junior season, hitting .429 with 33 hits and recording a .522 OBP … named First Team All-Burlington County … guided the team to its first playoff win in five years … won its first division title since 1987 … named Second Team All-Burlington County Scholastic League in her sophomore and freshman seasons … played on the West Jersey Witches Showcase team … placed in the Rising Stars All-American Game in 2012 … three-year varsity soccer starter … member of the National Honor Society, ranking seventh in her graduating class academically … daughter of William and Jeannine, who both graduated from Rutgers in 1989  … has a brother, Donovan, and a sister, Jenna … her grandfather, two uncles and one of her cousin also attended Rutgers.

    Nelson on Kott: “Jacqueline’s speed will help her in covering the outfield on defense and to take the extra base on offense. She is a real threat to steal anytime she is on base.”


    Sierra Maddox
    3B, C  | 5-8 | R/R
    Kennesaw, Ga./ Harrison HS

    Notes: A three-year varsity softball letterwinner at Harrison HS … led her squad to state runner-up in her freshman and junior seasons, also making three elite eight appearance … selected to first team all-region teams three times, first team all-state as a senior, second team all-county as a junior … hit .398 with five home runs in her junior season … played five years with the Atlanta Vipers travel team … Vipers won the 2013 ASA State Championship and ASA National Championship … finished the ASA National Tournament hitting .474 with 16 RBIs, including four hits and seven RBIs in final two games of the championship … maintained a 4.0 GPA all four years at Harrison … a member of the National Honor Society and National Math Honors Society … daughter of Kelley and Jaime … her sister, Dresden, is a sophomore pitcher on the Rutgers softball team.

    Nelson on Maddox: “Sierra is another line drive gap hitter with power. Sierra is the younger sister of Dresden Maddox, so we have been following her for a long time. She is a tremendous corner infielder who is quick to bunts and is also a catcher with a strong arm.”


    Danielle Petrone

     C  | 5-6 | R/R
    Wall, N.J./ Wall Township HS

    Notes: Hit a state-high 16 home runs and finished with 47 RBI, 46 runs, 26 walks and a .535 batting average as a junior at Wall Township HS … named Second Team All-New Jersey by MSG Varsity after her junior season … named First Team All-State by the Star-Ledger … daughter of Pete and Mary Ann … born on April 22, 1996.

    Nelson on Petrone: “Dani is a classic power hitter who will eventually end up batting in the 3-5 spot in the line-up. She has great arm strength and plays outfield and catches.  Her arm strength will help her control the opponents running game.”
