RU Faces LIU, Lafayette to Close Out Non-Conference Slate
Scarlet Knights travel to N.Y., Pa., in consecutive days

    PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 29, 2013) – The Rutgers softball team wraps up its nonconference schedule with a pair of midweek opponents, as the Scarlet Knights face LIU on Tuesday, April 30 followed by Lafayette on Wednesday, May 1.

    RU visits LIU tomorrow for a 6 p.m. contest on LIU Field and will travel to Easton, Pa., on Wednesday for a doubleheader against Lafayette, beginning at 2:30 p.m.

    The Scarlet Knights (26-24, 7-12) enter tomorrow’s contest after taking one of three from St. John’s over the weekend in Queens, N.Y. RU currently holds onto the final spot in the conference standings, as the squad will play its final BIG EAST series of the season from May 4-5 at home against Pittsburgh.

    By taking one of three from the Red Storm, RU reached the 26-win mark for the second straight season and fourth time in the past 18 years.

    LIU enters its Tuesday matchup with RU after splitting a doubleheader against Mount St. Mary’s on Sunday, April 28 in Brooklyn, N.Y. The Blackbirds (17-35, 13-7) currently sit in fourth place in the Northeast Conference standings, and are paced with consistency from the plate.

    Lauren Morizi leads the Blackbirds with a .407 batting average, 18 doubles and 28 RBIs, while Whitney West (.342), Emily Kakuska (.317) and Nochole Toven (.301) all own .300-plus averages.

    Cassie Vondrak leads LIU from the circle with a 12-30 record and 4.12 ERA in 205.1 innings pitched.

    Against Lafayette, RU is 12-0 all-time, outscoring the Leopards 92-17 in those meetings. The series dates back to 1985.

    The Leopards are on an eight-game losing streak entering their doubleheader with the Scarlet Knights, who serve as their final opponent of the 2013 season. Brittany Paul leads Lafayette with a .282 average, registering 44 hits in 156 at-bats.

    Melissa Robinson serves as the Leopards’ ace, boasting a 9-20 record and 3.28 ERA in 193 innings pitched this season.
