  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 25, 2013) –  A three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning was not enough for the Rutgers softball team  to overcome a six-run deficit, as Monmouth topped the Scarlet Knights, 6-3, Thursday afternoon at the RU Softball Complex.

RU (25-22, 6-10) tallied five hits in final inning, as junior Alexis Durando (Oakland, N.J.) got things going with a base hit single. Freshman Jordan Whitely (Clayton, Del.) followed her up with single before classmate Stephanie Huang (Paramus, N.J.) reached base on an error two batter later to cut the lead to 6-1.

Freshmen Melanie Slowinski (Severn, Md.) and Elizabeth Adams (Crystal Lake, Ill.) each slapped consecutive singles of their own to plate two more runs and cut the MU lead to 6-3 with one out.

But Lauren Sulick went on to complete her 12th game of the season, forcing two of the next three RU batters to pop out to complete the 6-3 victory.

Freshman Dresden Maddox (Kennesaw, Ga.) took the loss in the outing, going 4.1 innings while surrendering three hits and one earned run. She walked four and struck out four in the loss.

Both teams were scoreless through the first three innings of play, before the Hawks’ Vanessa Cardoza hit a solo shot to left field to give MU a 1-0 lead. Monmouth (27-13, 12-4) added three more runs in the sixth inning off a three-run homer to bump its lead to 4-0.

The Hawks tacked on two more runs in the seventh frame before suppressing RU’s rally in the bottom half of the inning to earn the victory.

RU visits St. John’s this weekend to face the Red Storm in a pivotal BIG EAST series. The Scarlet Knights play the Johnnies in a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon, before capping the series with a Sunday matinee.

Rutgers currently holds onto the No. 7 spot in the BIG EAST with six conference games remaining.
