PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 18, 2013) – The Rutgers softball team earned their second consecutive home win Thursday at the RU Softball Complex, besting Iona, 9-5, to move to 7-0 all-time against the Gaels.

Three Scarlet Knights – freshman Jordan Whitley (Clayton, Del.), sophomore Chandler Howard (Wilmington, Del.) and junior Loren Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) – recorded multi-hit games in the 11-hit outing for RU, marking the second consecutive contest in which the squad eclipsed double-digit hits.

Howard’s hitting streak now stands at 14 games after her 2-2 day, as she improved her reached-base streak to 23 games in the process.

Also for the second straight contest, all three RU (25-19, 6-8) pitchers saw action. Freshman Dresden Maddox (Kennesaw, Ga.) started the game and went 3.1 innings without allowing a run. Senior righthander Abbey Houston (New Egypt, N.J.) entered in relief of Maddox, and surrendered four hits and five earned runs before sophomore Alyssa Landrith (Vacaville, Calif.) tossed the final 2.2 innings, recording six strikeouts.

RU got on the board in the first inning, as a Howard double – here team leading 11 – plated Williams to give the Scarlet Knights a 1-0 lead.

Rutgers broke the game open in the third and fourth innings, scoring three in the third and five in the fourth to build their lead to 9-0. A combined eight hits and two errors across the two innings made the scoring rally possible, as RU sought to end the game in five innings.

Courtesy of a grand slam from Iona’s Katie Jansson in the fifth inning, Iona avoided an early dismissal, cutting the lead to 9-5 after scoring a run earlier in the inning. But for the second straight game, the game hinged on the arm of Landrith, who tossed the final 2.2 innings to preserve the victory. The sophomore fanned two of the final three batters the final inning to seal the win.

The Scarlet Knights will enjoy their first off weekend since February before returning to the RU Softball Complex next Wednesday, April 24 to face Syracuse.
