PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 16, 2013) – The Rutgers softball team returns to the friendly confines of the RU Softball Complex Wednesday, April 17, to host America East opponent Stony Brook in a doubleheader. Game times are set for 2:30 and 4:30 p.m.

RU returns to the diamond on Thursday, April 18 to take on Iona in another home matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at the RU Softball Complex.

The Scarlet Knights (23-18, 6-8) enter the nonconference contests after being swept by Notre Dame last weekend in South Bend, Ind. It was the first time this season RU dropped consecutive conference matchups, as the sweep gave the team its second three-game skid of the season.

Rutgers will have the opportunity to rebound with a pair of opponents against which it has historically been successful. RU is 6-4 all-time against Stony Brook (22-17, 5-4), which enters after losing two of three to conference foe Albany. Two of the three games went into extra innings, with the Seawolves only prevailing in Game Two by taking a 4-3 victory in eight innings.

That victory gave head coach Megan Ryan her 700th career victory, making her the 35th coach in NCAA Division I softball history to reach that milestone. Alexandra Pisciotta, who leads the Seawolves with a .328 batting average, went 6-13 with two home runs, three RBIs and two runs scored in her last three games.

In the circle, Stony Brook is paced by Christine Lucido, who owns a 9-1 record and 1.92 ERA this season.

Against Iona (8-28, 4-4), RU boasts an unblemished 6-0 record, having surrendered just seven runs to the Gaels in those meetings. Beth Kann is the Gaels’ leading hitter this season with a .304 batting average, 35 hits and five home runs. Sarah Shutts is Iona’s most dangerous slugger, boasting a team-leading .551 slugging percentage with six doubles and as many homers.

Iona took its most recent matchup against Rider, 10-5, in eight innings. The Gaels visit Army today for a doubleheader matchup, set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
