PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 8, 2013) – Junior first baseman Alexis Durando (Oakland, N.J.) is the latest Rutgers softball player to receive BIG EAST Weekly Honors, the conference announced. Durando went 9-17 (.529) in five games for the Scarlet Knights (21-14), launching two home runs – one game-winner and one grand slam – recording eight RBIs, three doubles and scoring six runs.
Durando’s standout week began in RU’s first game of a doubleheader against Hofstra (4/3). The junior stepped to the plate in the top of the eighth inning and launched a solo shot to break a scoreless tie, ultimately winning the game for the Scarlet Knights.
Her success carried over into RU’s third BIG EAST series of the season against Georgetown, as the junior hit .545 and notched six RBIs in a three-game span. With RU down, 1-0, in the third inning of game two, Durando blasted a grand slam as part of a five-run inning.
Durando hit safely in all five games during the week, posting four two-hit games in the process. Following her success, she now leads the team in batting average (.357), RBIs (25) and slugging percentage (.612). The junior is also tied for the team lead in home runs (five) and doubles (eight).
Durando is the third Scarlet Knight to earn BIG EAST Weekly Honors this season. Junior outfielder Loren Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) and senior catcher Kaci Madden (Saratoga, N.Y.) also earned the distinction, with Williams being named to the Honor Roll twice.
The Scarlet Knights return to the diamond on Wednesday, April 10, when they travel to Villanova to face the Wildcats in a doubleheader.
