PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 7, 2013) – In the series finale, the Rutgers softball team downed Georgetown, 3-1, at the RU Softball Complex, Sunday. The Scarlet Knights took two of the three games from the Hoyas.

RU improved to 21-14 (5-4 BIG EAST), while Georgetown fell to 14-24 (4-4 BIG EAST). Sophomore starting pitcher Alyssa Landrith (Vacaville, Calif.) moved to 12-8 in 2013.

The Scarlet Knights were led by junior 1B Alexis Durando (Oakland, N.J.), who went 2-for-2, sophomore LF Chandler Howard (North Wilmington, Del.), who knocked in two runs, and freshman DH Stephanie Huang (Paramus, N.J.), who went 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Rutgers opened the scoring, taking a one-run lead in the bottom of the fourth. Durando started the inning with a single to left field and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman 3B Jordan Whitley (Clayton, Del.). Durando moved to third on a fly ball to right field and later scored on an RBI single through the left side by Huang.

The Scarlet Knights added two more runs in the fifth as freshman SS Melanie Slowinski (Severn, Md.) reached on an error by the Georgetown shortstop. Junior RF Loren Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) followed with a walk. With runners on first and second, Howard doubled to center field, driving in Slowinski and Williams to put RU ahead 3-0.

In the seventh, Georgetown threatened the Scarlet Knights’ lead as Georgetown’s Megan Hyson doubled down the left field line to start the inning. Taylor Henry followed with a single to left, driving in Hyson to pull the Hoyas within two scores (3-1). With two outs and a pair of runners on the bases, Landrith closed the door on Georgetown, getting Samantha Giovanniello to pop out to second and give Rutgers the 3-1 win.

Rutgers is back in action on the road, taking on BIG EAST foe Villanova for a doubleheader in Villanova, Pa., on Wednesday, April 10 at 1 p.m.
