PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March. 30, 2013) – Behind the arm of sophomore lefty Alyssa Landrith (Vacaville, Calif.) the Rutgers softball team (18-12, 3-3) earned a 6-0 victory Saturday afternoon at the RU Softball Complex. With the victory, the Scarlet Knights beat UConn in a season series for the first time since 1998, when RU won its two regular season meetings against the Huskies.
RU owns its best record through 30-games since 2003, when the team was 17-13 at that point in the season.
For the second time in three outings, Landrith dominated. She recorded her fourth shutout of the season – second of the week – and allowed just three hits in 7.0 innings of work. She also tied her season high with eight strikeouts and walked just one UConn batter.
Offensively, RU carried over its momentum from Game Two of the series to put six runs on the board. Senior Kaci Madden (Saratoga, N.Y.) had her best performance of the season, as the catcher went 2-2 with three RBIs and a run scored. She blasted a two-run shot, her first of the season, in the bottom of the second inning to give RU a 2-0 lead.
From there the Scarlet Knights would tack on three in the fourth off of two hits and add another run in the fifth to take the 6-0 victory.
RU gets back on the road Wednesday, April 3, for a doubleheader at Hofstra. The Scarlet Knights are 10-23 all-time against the Pride and are winless against them in their last 10 tries. Rutgers last defeated Hofstra on April 7, 2004, by a 10-5 margin.
Game times are set for 4 and 6 p.m. at the Hofstra Softball Stadium located in Hempstead, N.Y.
