PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 28, 2013) – The Rutgers Softball team continues its five-game home stand Friday afternoon, when the Scarlet Knights welcome BIG EAST foe UConn to the RU Softball Complex for their first home conference contests.

The teams will play a doubleheader on Friday – game times are set for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. – before closing out the series with a Saturday matinee. RVision, presented by AT&T, will broadcast Friday’s doubleheader live at scarletknights.com. Danny Breslauer will be on the call.

The Scarlet Knights (16-11, 1-2), winners of nine of their last 11 games, enter the series on a two-game winning streak after sweeping Hartford on Wednesday in a midweek doubleheader. Sophomore Alyssa Landrith (Vacaville, Calif) and freshman Dresden Maddox (Kennesaw, Ga.) pitched RU to a pair of shutout victories, allowing the squad to outscore the Hawks 12-0 on the afternoon.

UConn (12-11, 0-0) opens its BIG EAST slate this weekend in its visit to “The Banks”. UConn leads the all-time series between the two schools, 43-24-2, but RU took their latest meeting, 13-7, on April 3, 2011.

The Huskies enter the series after dropping their home opener to Quinnipiac on Wednesday by a 4-3 mark. Trailing 4-1 in the seventh, UConn crossed two runs as part of a late-game rally, but could not tally the equalizer to force the game into extra innings.

UConn heads to Piscataway with one of the most dangerous sluggers in the BIG EAST in Kim Silva. Silva boasts a slugging percentage of .612 this season, having notched nine doubles and two home runs in 67 at-bats. Leading the Huskies in hits (31) is Maddy Schiappa, whose .360 batting average is second only to Silva (.388), whose mark ranks seventh in the conference.

Kiki Saveriano is the ace of the Huskie staff, and is tied with Landrith for the seventh-most wins (9) in the BIG EAST this season. She leads the UConn pitching staff with a 1.45 ERA and .226 opposing batting average.
