PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March. 26, 2013) – The Rutgers softball team returns to the RU Softball Complex on Wednesday, March 27, to host Hartford in its first home action of the 2013 season. The Scarlet Knights (14-11, 1-2) enter the midweek doubleheader after taking one of three from USF, snapping a 17-game losing streak to the Bulls.
First pitch for Game One of the doubleheader is set for 2:30 p.m. ET, as the second game is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live by RVision, presented by AT&T, online at Scarletknights.com. Danny Breslauer will be on the call for both contests.
RU enjoyed a successful spring break trip to Clearwater, Fla., where the squad put together a six-game winning streak. The Scarlet Knights have won seven of their last 10 contests, with two of the losses coming by only one run and in extra inning action.
Sophomore Jackie Bates (Lincroft, N.J.) and juniors Alexis Durando (Oakland, N.J.) and Loren Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) paced RU from the plate over break, as all three hit at least .312 or better. Durando rides a 10-game hitting streak into RU’s matchup with Hartford, and has recorded 10 RBIs, three home runs and scored eight runs in the past 10 games.
Bates is on a four-game tear from the dish, hitting .538 in that span to bump her season average to .260.
Williams has been consistent all season long in the leadoff spot for RU and carried her hot bat into spring break, hitting .333 in 10 games. She notched a three-RBI, two-home run game in RU’s 15-6 rout of Boston College in Clearwater, and leads RU with a .352 mark from the plate.
Freshman righthander Dresden Maddox (Kennesaw, Ga.) boasts a 4-1 record from the circle this season after going 7.0 innings and allowing just five hits against USF to snap RU’s 17-game losing skid to the Bulls. She is second on the team with a 2.71 ERA and is third in the BIG EAST with an opposing batting average of .188.
Hartford enters the doubleheader with a 7-14 record, pending the result of the Hawks’ doubleheader at Rider Tuesday afternoon. The Hawks will visit “The Banks” for the first time ever for the pair of midweek contests, and will do so with ace pitcher Zuzana Kudernatschov. Kudernatshov is 5-6 this season but boasts a 1.98 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 70.2 innings of work.
At the plate the Hawks are led by Erica Phelps, who is hitting .281 in 56 at-bats with seven RBIs.
