CLEARWATER (March 16, 2013) – The Rutgers softball team moved its record to 8-9 after being edged by Oklahoma State, 2-1 in the first game, then and topping Boston University, 4-3, in its first day of weekend play in Clearwater, Fla., on Friday.
In the first game, the scoreboard sat at zeroes until the top of the eighth when RU freshman Stephanie Huang (Paramus, N.J.) notched a run on a pass ball to give the Scarlet Knights a 1-0 edge.
The Cowgirls responded emphatically in the bottom of the extra frame. Freshman Shianne Hughes scored on a double by senior Tamara Brown. Later in the inning, junior Tarah Ettinger hit the walk off single, scoring senior Stephanie Brewer to give the Cowgirls the 2-1 victory.
RU pitcher Alyssa Landrith (Vacaville, Calif.) pitched brilliantly the entire game, striking out 6. She was outdueled, however, by a duo of Cowgirl pitchers, who held the Scarlet Knights to only 1 hit.
In the nightcap, the RU bats came alive, scoring 4 runs on 9 hits to top the Boston University Terriers. The Scarlet Knights tallied four hits in the fifth with Alexis Durando's (Oakland, N.J.) single to center driving in what proved to be the game-winning run. Left fielder, Chandler Howard (Wilmington, Del.) had three hits for the Scarlet Knights. Third Baseman, Jordan Whitley (Clayton, Del.) and first baseman Durando also notched two hits in the victory.
RU Pitchers Abbey Houston (New Egypt, N.J.) and Dresden Maddox (Kennesaw, Ga.) combined to limit BU to only one earned run on 4 hits to cement the victory.
