FAIRFAX, Va. (March 1, 2013) – The Rutgers softball team scored eight runs in the final four innings of play to beat host-school George Mason, 8-3, in its first game at the Patriot Classic. The Scarlet Knights (3-3) pull to .500 for the first time this season, as multi-RBI games by sophomore Chandler Howard (Wilmington, Del.) and senior Ashley Bragg (Middletown, Del.) paved the way for the RU victory.

Senior righthander Abbey Houston (New Egypt, N.J.) earned her first win of the season in her second start, throwing for four innings and allowing three earned runs.

RU was down 3-0 until the bottom of the third inning, when the team put together consecutive two-run innings to take the lead. From there, the Scarlet Knights never looked back, plating four runs over the following two innings to seal the victory.

Sophomore southpaw Alyssa Landrith (Vacaville, Calif.) threw for three innings in relief of Houston, allowing no runs and no hits while striking out six.

The Scarlet Knights continue their stay in Fairfax tomorrow, when they play Rider (2:30) and George Mason (4:30) in a Saturday doubleheader.
