Alden blasted a grand slam in the first inning to give RU a 4-0 lead.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (February 17, 2013) – Sophomore Ashley Alden (Ivyland, Pa.) blasted a grand slam in the opening inning and left-hander Alyssa Landrith (Vacaville, Calif.) went the distance to propel the Rutgers softball team to a 9-2 victory against Boise State. The contest was RU’s final game at the UTSA Classic, and gave the Scarlet Knights (2-3) their second win of the season.

Already with a 6-2 lead heading into the bottom half of the sixth, RU put together another rally to add three more runs to its lead. A double by senior Ashley Bragg (Middletown, Del.) followed by a two-RBI single by senior Loren Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) led to the big inning, and allowed Landrith to close out the victory a half inning later.

The Scarlet Knights threatened from the get-go against BSU, as Williams and sophomores Chandler Howard (Wilmington, Del.) and Jackie Bates (Lincroft, N.J.) all reached safely to open the contest. With no outs and the bases loaded, Alden stepped to the plate and launched a grand slam to left field on an 0-1 count. The home run was Alden’s first hit of the season and the fourth homer of her career.

RU travels to Fairfax, Va., on Friday, March 1 to compete in the Patriot Classic.

    • Williams went 2-4 against the Broncos, extending her hitting streak to nine games dating back to last season.
    • Alden blasted a grand slam in the first inning to give RU a 4-0 lead. It was her third career slam and fourth home run overall.
    • Alden was the first RU player to record five RBIs in a game since Chandler Howard did it on March 28, 2012 against Seton Hall.
    • Landrith picked up her second win of the season with a complete game outing against BSU. She allowed nine hits, two runs and struck out seven in the victory. It was the 25th complete game of her career.
