Notre Dame, Ind. (May 10, 2012) – Rutgers softball dropped a 5-0 decision to Notre Dame Thursday evening in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament at Melissa Cook Stadium. Sophomore outfielder Loren Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) and freshman outfielder Chandler Howard (Wilmington, Del.) both doubled for the Scarlet Knights (26-28).
Notre Dame (37-13) advances to the second round of the tournament, taking on No. 6 seed St. John’s Friday at 6:30 p.m.
Freshman pitcher Alyssa Landrith (Vacaville, Calif.) – the BIG EAST Rookie of the Year – allowed five runs on six hits while striking out two through six innings. Howard and Williams each went one-of-three for the game.
Notre Dame got on the board first, as a sacrifice fly to deep center field scored Alexa Maldonado from third. Senior outfielder Lindsey Curran (Monroe Township, N.J.) robbed ND’s Dani Miller of a home run with a grab over the wall on the play. A bunt single from Emilee Koerner put the Irish up 2-0 in the bottom of the first.
The Irish added three runs on two hits in the third. Koerner hit a two-run shot to right field to push ND to a 5-0 lead.
Williams answered with a double to right center in the top of the fourth. Senior third baseman Brittney Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second, but the Scarlet Knights were unable to capitalize.
Howard attempted to rally the squad with a two-out double to left center in the seventh, but RU could not get the rookie home.
