  • LOUISVILLE, Ky. (April 7, 2012) – Rutgers softball fell short on its comeback, dropping the series finale against BIG EAST opponent No. 12/13 Louisville 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at Ulmer Stadium. The Scarlet Knights pulled within one but were unable to bring home the tying run, leaving six runners on base in the contest.

The Cardinals (33-2, 7-2 BIG EAST) picked up three runs on three hits in the third inning. Sophomore Hannah Kiyohara drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. A double – the first of two in the inning – from freshman Whitney Arion helped to score Kiyohara. An error on the Scarlet Knights extended the inning, allowing junior Jennifer Esteban to reach first. Redshirt sophomore Jordan Trimble followed with a single and sophomore Katie Keller picked up the two-out two-run double, scoring Estban and Trimble for the 3-0 advantage.

Rutgers (16-20, 5-6 BIG EAST) pulled within one, 3-2, in the top of the fourth, as a double to right center from sophomore Alexis Durando (Oakland, N.J.) drove in senior Brittney Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) – who reached base on a single – and junior Jennifer Harabedian (Flemington, N.J.) – who drew a walk.

RU put a runner on base in every inning of the contest but was unable to bring them around to even up the score.

Starting pitcher Alyssa Landrith (Vacaville, Calif.) threw all six innings of action, giving up one earned run on six hits in the losing effort (11-7). Louisville starter Tori Collins (15-1) pitched four innings, allowing two runs on three hits. Chelsea Leonard came in relief, tossing the final three innings for the save.

The Scarlet Knights return home on Wednesday, April 7 when they host Notre Dame for a doubleheader at noon at the RU Softball Complex.
