  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Freshman Domenique Esposito (Rivervale, NJ) scored on a busted free-kick play to lift the Rutgers women’s soccer team (6-3-2, 1-0 BIG EAST) to a 1-0 victory at Seton Hall (2-7-1, 0-2 BIG EAST) Wednesday, Oct. 1, in the Scarlet Knights’ BIG EAST Conference Mid-Atlantic Division opener.

With 13 minutes to play, Rutgers was fouled just outside of the Seton Hall box and awarded a free kick. Junior Carli Lloyd’s (Delran, NJ) took the kick and blasted it in to the wall, but she was able to poke the rebound over to Esposito on the right side of the box, and the rookie beat the Pirate keeper to the lower-left corner. Appearing in just her third collegiate match after missing the beginning of the season due to an injury, Esposito had two excellent chances earlier in the second half, each time just missing the far post from the right side.

“I thought we played very well in the second half,” fourth-year head coach Glenn Crooks said. “I was happy with our composure, and we made it very difficult for them to get the ball out of their own end, which eventually resulted in our goal. We continue to struggle to finish opportunities, but we looked a lot better today. Domenique is a very strong attacking player, and she showed some of those abilities today. She can create her own shots, and she likes to go to goal and score. She definitely helped provide a bonus to our attack today.”

Freshman Robyn Jones (Titusville, NJ) made one save for the victory (4-3-2), her third shutout of the year.

Rutgers was ranked seventh by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and ninth by Soccerbuzz in the Mid-Atlantic Region this week (Sept. 29).

Rutgers will travel to Syracuse, NY, to take on the Orangewomen Friday, Oct. 3, at 7:00 p.m. in a BIG EAST cross-divisional match.
