PISCATAWAY, NJ – Sophomore Kelly Evans (Saddle Brook, NJ) scored in the 107th minute to lift the Rutgers women’s soccer team (5-2-1) to a 1-0 double-overtime victory against Monmouth (3-2) Sept. 23 at Yurcak Field.
Despite a 17-3 RU shot advantage entering the second overtime, the Scarlet Knights could not find the back of the net. Then, with 3:24 to play in the second and final overtime period, redshirt sophomore Christine Wentzler (Northvale, NJ) delivered a pass to a streaking Evans down the right side. Evans received the ball and beat the Monmouth keeper to the lower left corner of the goal to give RU the victory. For Evans, the score was her fourth of the year, and the first game-winning goal of her career.
“It’s a sign of a good team when you can come out on top in a game like this,” fourth-year head coach Glenn Crooks said. “We’ve been chiding our forwards all week that we need another scorer besides Carli (Lloyd). That’s a big moment for her to finish like that, and I’m very happy for her.”
Sophomore Nora Crawford (McLean, VA) got the start in goal, making one save for the victory (2-0). Coming on the heels of the 0-0 tie against No. 11 Penn State Sept. 19, it marked the first time in school history that Rutgers went to double overtime in consecutive matches.
Rutgers was ranked fifth by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and seventh by Soccerbuzz in the Mid-Atlantic Region this week (Sept. 22). RU also received votes in the NSCAA Top 25 Poll.
Rutgers will host Loyola Friday, Sept. 26, at 7:00 p.m.
