PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers women’s soccer team (4-2-1) will play its first of three in-state opponents this year with a home match against Monmouth (3-1) Tuesday, Sept. 23, at 7:00 p.m. The Monmouth match-up begins a six-day stretch for the Scarlet Knights that will feature three home matches.
Rutgers is 4-2-1 this season following a 0-0 double-overtime tie against No. 11 Penn State on Sept. 19. Junior All-American Carli Lloyd (Delran, NJ) leads the Scarlet Knights with 15 points (7 G, 1 A). Sophomore Kelly Evans (Saddle Brook, NJ) is second with six points (3 G), followed by freshman Tierney Brady (Brick, NJ) with three (1 G, 1 A). Freshman Robyn Jones (Titusville, NJ) has posted a 0.76 goals-against average and a .792 save percentage for RU, starting six of the Scarlet Knights’ seven matches. Also leading the defense is sophomore back Kim Brandao (Rahway, NJ), who was named the BIG EAST Conference Defensive Player of the Week Sept. 22.
Monmouth is 3-1 following a 2-1 win at Drexel Sept. 10. Sophomore Kate Sands leads the Hawks with seven points (3 G, 1 A). Junior Abby Shiffler has posted a 0.53 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage in goal this season. Monmouth returned 16 letterwinners and six starters from a 2002 team that finished with an 11-5-3 overall record and a 6-2-2 mark in the Northeast Conference to finish third.
Rutgers is ranked fifth by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) in the Mid-Atlantic Region (Sept. 22). The Scarlet Knights also received votes in this week’s NSCAA Top 25 Poll.
Rutgers is 9-1 (.900) all time against Monmouth, including a 5-0 (1.000) mark against the Hawks at Yurcak Field. The last time the two teams met, the Scarlet Knights defeated Monmouth 3-2 in Piscataway (Oct. 21, 1992).
Rutgers will be back in action Friday, Sept. 26, against Loyola at 7:00 p.m.
