  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Rutgers sophomore Kim Brandao (Rahway, NJ) has been named the BIG EAST Conference Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office has announced.

Brandao, a back, helped lead Rutgers to a 0-0 double-overtime tie against No. 11 Penn State Sept. 19. The Nittany Lions outshot the Scarlet Knights 5-2 in the first half, but Brandao and the RU defense tightened up the marking, limiting Penn State to just one shot in the final 65 minutes for a final 7-6 Rutgers advantage. Most impressive was the job that Brandao and her teammates did on Penn State first-team All-American Joanna Lohman, not allowing the Nittany Lions’ leading scorer to take a single shot. The shutout also was the first time this year that Penn State has been held scoreless.

Brandao is the first Scarlet Knight to earn a weekly BIG EAST award this year. A member of the 2002 BIG EAST All-Rookie Team, Brandao is the second Knight in Rutgers history to earn defensive player-of-the-week honors from the conference office (Susan Curtis; Sept. 2, 1996).

Rutgers (4-2-1), under the direction of fourth-year head coach Glenn Crooks, will play three home matches in a six-day span this week, beginning with Monmouth on Tuesday, Sept. 23, at 7:00 p.m.
