  • LEXINGTON, KY – The Rutgers women’s soccer team (4-2) used a pair of second-half goals to upset No. 14 Kentucky (2-4-1) 2-1 Sept. 13 at the Kentucky Invitational.

The Wildcats struck first, scoring in the 18th minute on their only shot of the first half. It took Rutgers until the 74th minute to get the equalizer, when junior Meghan Cameron (Succasunna, NJ) scored her first goal of the year, unassisted. Less than a minute later, junior All-American Carli Lloyd (Delran, NJ) dribbled in and scored from 25 yards out for the go-ahead score. Freshman Robyn Jones (Titusville, NJ) made one save for the win (3-2). For RU, it was the first win against a ranked opponent since the second round of the 2001 NCAA Tournament, when the Scarlet Knights upset No. 22 Princeton 1-0 on the Tigers’ home field.

“This is the best we have played all year,” fourth-year head coach Glenn Crooks said. “We would have loved to come home 5-1, but after what happened on Friday (2-1 loss to Iowa), we really needed the win as we prepare for (No. 7) Penn State on Sept. 19. We came out and controlled the game, and the team came in ready to do whatever it took to win. It shows us that we can be competitive with any team.”

Rutgers was ranked tied for fifth by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and sixth by Soccerbuzz in the Mid-Atlantic Region this week (Sept. 8). Kentucky was ranked 14th by the NSCAA and 22nd by Soccerbuzz nationally. The Wildcats also were rated tied for second by the NSCAA and third by Soccerbuzz in the Great Lakes Region.

Rutgers dominated the match offensively, outshooting the Wildcats 10-3 and drawing five first-half corners.

With her fourth game-winning goal of the year, Lloyd moved into sole possession of third place on the RU career chart (11).

Rutgers will begin a four-match homestand on Friday, Sept. 19, when the Knights host No. 7 Penn State at 7:00 p.m.
