PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers women’s soccer team (2-0) earned its second consecutive victory, defeating Stony Brook (0-1) 3-0 Aug. 31 at Yurcak Field.
With the victory, the Scarlet Knights opened the season with two consecutive wins for the first time since 1999, when Rutgers won its first three matches.
“Overall, it was a good weekend,” fourth-year head coach Glenn Crooks said. “We had eight goals, zero against, and won both matches. We had some nice goals today. Kelly (Evans) already has more goals (three) than she did all of last year (two), so it tells you about her improvement. However, one of the goals our team set this year was to play every match with the same intensity, and I thought we lacked some intensity today. Intensity and execution go hand-in-hand, so we need to continue to improve in that area.”
Junior All-American Carli Lloyd (Delran, NJ) quickly got the Scarlet Knights on the scoreboard, taking a pass from freshman Jaime Komar (Matawan, NJ) and beating the keeper 1 v. 1 to the upper-right corner in the 12th minute. Sophomore Kelly Evans (Saddle Brook, NJ) made the lead 2-0 eight minutes later, receiving a ball from redshirt sophomore Christine Wentzler (Northvale, NJ), dodging two defenders and blasting the ball to the corner of the net.
Lloyd continued her prolific weekend with her second goal of the day, and fourth in two matches, in the 55th minute. Freshman Tierney Brady (Brick, NJ) sent a ball up the right side to Lloyd, who picked it up and scored across the face of the goal from just outside the six-yard box.
Sophomore Nora Crawford (McLean, VA) and freshman Robyn Jones (Titusville, NJ) shared the shutout in goal. Crawford played the first half and picked up the win (1-0), while Jones played the final 45:00 minutes and made one save. The Rutgers defense once again was sharp, limiting the Seawolves to just two shots. In the first two matches, RU’s opponents have managed a total of three shots, one of which was on goal.
Rutgers will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 5, when the Scarlet Knights take on Oklahoma at the Notre Dame Classic at 5:00 p.m.
