PISCATAWAY, NJ -- The Rutgers women's soccer team won its lone exhibition match of the 2003 preseason, defeating Bethesda Excel 3-0 Aug. 23 at Yurcak Field.
RU took advantage of a 13-6 advantage in shots, getting on the scoreboard in the 27th minute when junior All-American Carli Lloyd (Delran, NJ) knocked in the rebound of sophomore Kelly Evans' (Saddle Brook, NJ) shot. Redshirt sophomore Christine Wentzler (Northvale, NJ) then made the score 2-0 when Lloyd fed her a ball, through the legs of the defender, and she converted from the right side of the box. Lloyd picked up her second assist in the 89th minute, heading a ball over to Evans, who then scored for the final margin.
Freshman Robyn Jones (Titusville, NJ) started in goal, making one save in the first half. Sophomore Nora Crawford (McLean, VA) made one save in the final 45 minutes.
Rutgers will officially begin the 2003 season on Friday, Aug. 29, when the Scarlet Knights host Providence in a non-conference match. The season opener is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
