  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers women’s soccer team (4-1-1) earned its third consecutive shutout with its 3-0 victory against Old Dominion (1-4) in the final round of the Rutgers DoubleTree Classic Sunday at Yurcak Field.

Sophomore all-American Carli Lloyd (Delran, NJ) got RU on the scoreboard in the 10th minute. Lloyd’s shot was deflected by a defender, and freshman Kelly Evans (Saddle Brook, NJ) headed the ball towards the goal and away from a charging ODU goalkeeper. Lloyd picked up the ball and scored her fifth goal of the year and 20th of her career, moving her into a tie for seventh on the RU career goals chart. She also moved into a tie for eighth place on the career points chart with her two assists later in the match (50).

Evans scored the Knights’ second goal in the 50th minute, taking Lloyd’s cross in the middle of the box and one-timing it past the ODU keeper. Junior Adrienne Dugandzic (Sicklerville, NJ) notched the final RU score with eight minutes remaining. Lloyd sent a long free kick to senior Boo Schubert (Delran, NJ) on the left side, and Dugandzic headed in Schubert’s cross to the middle of the box.

Senior Christine Caldwell (Wyckoff, NJ) made one save in the first half, earning the victory
(3-1-1). Classmate Angel Hadaway (Sunrise, FL) made one save in the second half.

The Lady Monarch’s best scoring chance came in the 84th minute, when Hadaway collided with ODU’s Heather Vaughan in the box and a penalty kick was awarded. The Monarchs could not take advantage as Diana Baucom’s kick hit the cross bar.

“We were able to create some nice opportunities on goal today,” third-year head coach Glenn Crooks said. “It was nice to be able to finish those opportunities today.”

The win marked the third consecutive shutout for Rutgers following a 2-0 win against Delaware Sept. 8 and a 3-0 victory against Boston University Sept. 13.

Rutgers was rated seventh by Soccerbuzz and 10th by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) in the Mid-Atlantic Region this week (Sept. 9).

The Scarlet Knights will begin BIG EAST Conference Mid-Atlantic Division play next weekend when Rutgers plays at No. 11 Notre Dame Friday, Sept. 20, and at Pittsburgh Sunday, Sept. 22.
