  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers women’s soccer team has been picked to finish third in Division B in the BIG EAST Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, while RU senior Zoe Avner (Paris, France) has been named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team, the conference office announced.

Rutgers received 93 points to finish third in the Division B Poll, trailing 2004 national champion Notre Dame (120 points, 15 first-place votes) and 2004 NCAA Tournament second-round qualifier Villanova (102 points, one first-place vote). Georgetown (68 points) was fourth in the division, followed by Louisville (62), DePaul (49), Seton Hall (44) and Cincinnati (29).

Connecticut (118 points, 13 first-place votes) was picked to win Division A, followed by West Virginia (108, three), Syracuse (80), Marquette (77), St. John’s (68), Pittsburgh (51), South Florida (39) and Providence (27).

Avner, a senior midfielder, was selected to the 2004 BIG EAST All-Third Team. A starter in every match during her two seasons “On the Banks,” she has recorded four career assists. This marks the fourth consecutive season that the Scarlet Knights have placed a player on the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team (Carli Lloyd, 2002-2004).

Rutgers finished the 2004 season with a 9-10-1 mark overall and a 4-5-1 record in conference play, advancing to the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Tournament. The Scarlet Knights will begin the 2005 campaign with three consecutive home matches, starting with an Aug. 26 match-up against Temple at 7:00 p.m.
