  • PISCATAWAY, NJ - The Rutgers women's soccer team (9-9, 4-5 BIG EAST) lost 1-0 to Pittsburgh (5-7-1, 2-4-1 BIG EAST) in the Scarlet
Knights' regular-season home finale Oct. 17 at Yurcak Field.

The Panthers scored in the 29th minute, when Lisa Schulte intercepted a back pass and raced down the field. Her first shot was stopped by Rutgers keeper Robyn Jones (Titusville, NJ), and Janean Gardener's follow-up was also deflected. The ball then came back to the far post, and Schulte was able to knock it in on the goal line, past a sprawled out Rutgers defender and Jones.

"I thought we controlled a lot of the match, especially in the second half," said fifth-year head coach Glenn Crooks. "But, control doesn't guarantee a
victory. Their keeper came up big a couple of times on shots. Something is definitely missing, though, when we only have six shots on goal. In a match that would have clinched a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament for us, we just didn't come through."

Jones made four saves for the Scarlet Knights in goal (9-9). The Scarlet Knights honored their five seniors prior to the match - Lissette Brandao
(Rahway, NJ), Tara Froehlich (Red Bank, NJ), Carli Lloyd (Delran, NJ), Michelle McNamara (Toms River, NJ) and Christine Wentzler (Northvale, NJ).

Rutgers was ranked seventh by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and 10th by Soccerbuzz in this week's Mid-Atlantic Region Polls (Oct. 12). After Sunday's BIG EAST play, Rutgers remained in sixth place in the league standings. The top eight will qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament quarterfinals Oct. 30-31.

The Scarlet Knights will finish the regular season Friday, Oct. 22, with a match at No. 1 Notre Dame at 8:30 p.m. ET.
