WASHINGTON, DC – Senior All-American Carli Lloyd (Delran, NJ) became Rutgers’ career points leader as the Scarlet Knight women’s soccer team (7-7, 2-3 BIG EAST) defeated Georgetown (5-6, 2-2 BIG EAST) 2-0 Oct. 8 at North Kehoe Field.
Freshman Amanda Allessio (Langhorne, PA) put the Scarlet Knights on the scoreboard first, when she buried a ball that deflected off a Hoya defender in the 31st minute. For Allessio, it was her third goal of the year, and first since the opening weekend of the season.
Lloyd then scored less than three minutes later off an assist from sophomore Domenique Esposito (Rivervale, NJ), giving Lloyd 48 goals and 17 assists for 113 career points, surpassing the previous Rutgers record of 112 established by Kris Kurzynowski (1988-91).
The Rutgers defense did the rest, allowing the Hoyas a total of just two shots on goal during the match. Sophomore Robyn Jones (Titusville, NJ) made two saves for the Scarlet Knights in goal (7-7) for her sixth shutout of the year, a total that stands tied for 10th place on the RU single-season list.
“It’s another BIG EAST win on the road for us,” said fifth-year head coach Glenn Crooks. “Going in 1-3 in the BIG EAST, it very much was a necessary result for us. We were able to get off to a quick start again like we did at Villanova, and I know that we’re a hard team to come back on once we’ve taken the lead. It was a very good defensive effort tonight and a good enough offensive effort that at times was very good.”
Rutgers was ranked eighth by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and ninth by Soccerbuzz in this week’s Mid-Atlantic Region Polls (Oct. 5).
The Scarlet Knights will return home to face Syracuse Sunday, Oct. 10, at 1:00 p.m.
