PRINCETON, NJ – The Rutgers women’s soccer team (6-7) lost at No. 12 Princeton (8-1) 1-0 Oct. 5 at Lourie-Love Stadium.
The Tigers broke the scoreless tie in the 33rd minute on a goal off of a corner kick. Rutgers was able to turn up the pressure in the offensive third in the match’s final 20 minutes, twice just missing the back of the net off headers, but was unable to get the equalizer.
“To be honest, it was a really great match to watch,” said fifth-year head coach Glenn Crooks. “Princeton is a very good team, and we’re a very good team. The goal was unfortunate. You have to give them credit, though. They were putting a lot of pressure on us at the time, and sometimes weird things can happen when you are able to do that. Part of me thought that it was inevitable that we were going to be able to finish one (and score) at the end. But they did a good job of holding us off, and it just didn’t work out for us.”
Sophomore Robyn Jones (Titusville, NJ) made three saves for the Scarlet Knights in goal (6-7).
Rutgers was ranked eighth by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and ninth by Soccerbuzz in this week’s Mid-Atlantic Region Polls (Oct. 5). Princeton is rated 12th by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), 15th by Soccer America, 17th by Soccerbuzz and 18th by SoccerTimes.com in this week’s national polls. The Tigers also were picked third by both the NSCAA and Soccerbuzz in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
The Scarlet Knights will resume BIG EAST play, traveling to Washington, DC, to face Georgetown Friday, Oct. 8, at 3:00 p.m.
