PISCATAWAY, NJ – Four different Scarlet Knights scored to lead the Rutgers women’s soccer team (5-5) to a 4-0 victory against Monmouth (3-6-1) Sept. 29 at Yurcak Field.
The Scarlet Knights scored their first goal in the 24th minute, when freshman Leia Rispoli (Kendall Park, NJ) sent a free kick from just outside the left edge of the box to the far post and Lissette Brandao (Rahway, NJ) chested the ball in. For Brandao, it was her second game-winning goal of the year, and for the Scarlet Knights, it snapped a scoreless drought of almost 309 consecutive minutes. Just 32 seconds later, freshman back Ashley Lunemann (Hillsborough, NJ) sent a looping shot from almost 40 yards out over the head of the Monmouth goalkeeper, recording her first collegiate goal to give RU a 2-0 cushion.
Junior Danae Risoli (Hillsborough, NJ) crossed a ball from the goal line to the middle of the box in the 55th minute, and sophomore Domenique Esposito (Rivervale, NJ) was able to connect for her third goal of the year. Senior All-American Carli Lloyd (Delran, NJ) then finished off the scoring in the 77th minute, nearly falling to the ground but retaining possession, cutting and spinning to score from eight yards out on the left side of the box.
“It was a very good start,” said fifth-year head coach Glenn Crooks. “We told the team that we had 10 games remaining, and told the team what kind of record we needed in those 10 games. It was very important to get a good start (to the stretch), and I think we did that tonight.
“It’s nice to see four different names in the scoring ledger. It’s nice to see us score with some frequency.”
Sophomore Robyn Jones (Titusville, NJ) made two saves in goal for the Scarlet Knights (5-5), picking up her fourth shutout of the year. Tonight’s match was originally scheduled for Sept. 28, but was postponed due to heavy rains associated with the remnants of Hurricane Jeanne. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Scarlet Knights, (1-0 at No. 9 Florida Sept. 17, 1-0 double overtime to Seton Hall Sept. 22 and 2-0 at Connecticut Sept. 25). Rutgers was ranked ninth by Soccerbuzz in this week’s Mid-Atlantic Region Poll (Sept. 28).
The Scarlet Knights will resume BIG EAST Conference action, playing at No. 18 Villanova Friday, Oct. 1, at 4:00 p.m.
