  • LOS ANGELES, CA – Two goals by All-American Carli Lloyd (Delran, NJ) weren’t enough as the Rutgers women’s soccer team (2-2) fell 3-2 in double overtime at USC (2-2) Sept. 5.

Lloyd struck immediately, scoring from 35 yards out 3:33 into the match. The Women of Troy answered quickly, evening the score less than three minutes later with a header off a corner kick. Lloyd gave Rutgers a 2-1 lead in the 39th minute, breaking through the Trojans’ defense to score her second goal of the day. Once again, USC had a quick answer, knocking the ball into the lower right corner from 20 yards out in the 42nd minute.

Lloyd almost had a hat trick, scoring in the first overtime, but the goal was called off on an offsides call. Instead, the Women of Troy would get the game winner with less than five minutes to play in the second overtime period.

“We played well, but we’d score, then give one up right away,” said fifth-year head coach Glenn Crooks. “The overtimes went back and forth. The attacking part of our game has really improved, certainly a big improvement from Friday, and we’re very encouraged by that. Unfortunately, we just didn’t get the result we wanted.”

Rutgers outshot USC 20-12, and had six corners to the Trojans’ four. Sophomore Robyn Jones (Titusville, NJ) made three saves in goal for the Scarlet Knights (2-2).

With her two goals, Lloyd became just the second Scarlet Knight to accumulate 100 career points (103; 43 g, 17 a). She currently sits second in career points, goals and game-winning goals (13) on the RU charts.

The Scarlet Knights will return to Piscataway to host the Rutgers Classic next weekend. RU will face No. 2 Santa Clara Friday, Sept. 10, at 8:00 p.m. and Michigan State Sunday, Sept. 12, at 2:30 p.m.
