  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers women’s soccer team (2-0) earned its second consecutive shutout, a 3-0 decision against Fairleigh Dickinson (0-2) Aug. 29 at Yurcak Field.

In the 21st minute, junior Zoe Avner (Paris, France) passed the ball from the left corner to senior Carli Lloyd (Delran, NJ), who was waiting at the edge of the six-year box on the endline. Lloyd then found a wide open Lissette Brandao (Rahway, NJ) in the middle of the box, and she buried the ball from eight yards out.

Freshman Amanda Allessio (Langhorne, PA) made the score 2-0 in the 65th minute. Working a give-and-go with freshman Leia Rispoli (Kendall Park, NJ) in the midfield, Allessio evaded defenders as she moved through the box, cutting to her right and scoring. For Allessio, it was her second goal in as many matches.

Lloyd finished the scoring in the 81st minute, converting from the middle of the box on a perfect cross from freshman Brittney Smith (Howell, NJ). Lloyd’s three points moved her into a tie for second place on the Rutgers all-time points chart (99).

“We’re learning more each game in terms of which combinations work best together,” said fifth-year head coach Glenn Crooks. “In the first half, we just weren’t active enough. That was the only thing we talked about at halftime, nothing tactical, and I thought we did a better job in the second half in terms of playing with energy.”

Sophomore Robyn Jones (Titusville, NJ) made one save in goal for the Scarlet Knights (2-0).

Coupled with the 2-0 victory against Drexel Aug. 27, this marks the second consecutive year that Rutgers has begun the season with back-to-back shutouts. The Scarlet Knights were dominant on the offensive end against FDU, leading 10-1 in corners and 12-1 in shots.

Rutgers will go on its first road trip of the 2004 season next weekend, playing at Loyola Marymount Sept. 3 and USC Sept. 5.
