  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers women’s soccer team (1-0) scored twice in the final 13 minutes to defeat Drexel (0-1) 2-0 Aug. 27 in the season opener at Yurcak Field.

Rutgers had several chances, including a Carli Lloyd (Delran, NJ) strike off the post and two excellent tries by redshirt junior Tara Froehlich (Red Bank, NJ), in the second half. The Scarlet Knights finally broke through in the 78th minute, when freshman Leia Rispoli’s (Kendall Park, NJ) corner kick bounced out to the top of the box and classmate Amanda Allessio (Langhorne, PA) was able to strike it off the inside of the left post.

Rutgers scored again 10 minutes later, as freshman Ashley Lunemann (Hillsborough, NJ) found sophomore Domenique Esposito (Rivervale, NJ) and Esposito was able to score from 15 yards out on the left side of the box.

“Overall, it was a good performance, particularly in the second half,” said fifth-year head coach Glenn Crooks. “For whatever reason, whether it be nerves for the opener or something else, we didn’t seem to play with much urgency in the first half. But, we picked it up in the second half, and I thought we were always in control of the match. For Amanda, we hope that is the first of many goals for her in a Rutgers uniform. And it was a great finish by Domenique off an assist by another freshman (Lunemann). All of the freshmen performed very well in their debuts. It was a very good team effort, and everyone who got on the field made a contribution.”

Sophomore Robyn Jones (Titusville, NJ) did not have to make a save in picking up her first shutout of the year (1-0).

Rutgers will finish off the weekend with a home match against Fairleigh Dickinson Sunday, Aug. 29, at 7:00 p.m.
