PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers women’s soccer team scored twice in the first four minutes on its way to a 3-0 victory in a preseason scrimmage against Loyola Aug. 21 at Yurcak Field.
Senior All-American Carli Lloyd (Delran, NJ) struck first, receiving a ball from sophomore Jaime Komar (Matawan, NJ) at the top of the box, turning to her left and scoring to the lower right corner from 10 yards out less than 90 seconds into the match. Two minutes later, sophomore Domenique Esposito (Rivervale, NJ) bent a corner kick around the near post, and it skipped off a Loyola defender and in to the back of the net.
Play was halted in the ninth minute due to lightning and heavy rain, and nearly two hours later the match was resumed. Loyola’s best scoring chance of the match came midway through the first half, when a Loyola attacker beat her defender up the left side, but sophomore Robyn Jones (Titusville, NJ) was able to dive to her left and knock the shot wide.
Freshman Amanda Allessio (Langhorne, PA) finished the scoring in the 52nd minute, when a Zoe Avner (Paris, France) corner kick bounced around the box and Allessio was able to strike it through several defenders for the goal.
Jones and redshirt freshman Lauren Acosta (Brick, NJ) combined for the shutout. Jones made one save in her 65 minutes, while Acosta made two stops.
Rutgers, coming off a 2003 second-round NCAA Tournament appearance, will officially begin the 2004 season with a pair of home matches next weekend – Friday, Aug. 27, against Drexel and Sunday, Aug. 29, against Fairleigh Dickinson. Both matches will begin at 7:00 p.m.
