PISCATAWAY, N.J. (August 16, 2014) – The Rutgers women’s soccer team defeated former conference rival Villanova, 4-0, Saturday evening at Yurcak Field in its final tune-up of the preseason.
The four-goal effort is the second in consecutive scrimmage matches for RU, which defeated No. 12 West Virginia by a 4-2 margin in its preseason opener. All four goals scored against the Wildcats came in the second half of play.
“I thought in the first half we came out with a game plan and did some good things. Then I think maybe 20 minutes in or so we started to force the ball” said head coach Mike O’Neill. “In the second half we came out strong and just started to let the ball do the work.”
After heading into the locker room at halftime scoreless, the Scarlet Knights erupted for four goals in the first 15 minutes of the second stanza. Sophomore forward Madison Tiernan (Voorhees, N.J.), who notched two goals in the win, got things going in the 51st minute with a finish in front of the net.
Redshirt junior forward Amanda DeVolk (Frisco, Texas) crossed the ball from the right side before it was tapped by senior forward Stef Scholz (South Hackensack, N.J.) on the way in. Tiernan then connected with it and sent the ball into the back of the net.
Scholz scored next for RU in the 53rd minute, dribbling around a defender and hitting a rocket that beat the Villanova keeper back right.
Tiernan got on the board again by working her way into the middle just outside the box in the 60th minute, striking the ball in to make it a 3-0 Rutgers game.
Less than a minute later, DeVolk capped the scoring frenzy with a laser at the far right post to make it 4-0. Junior forward Rachel Cole (Teaneck, N.J.) created the opportunity, driving at the keeper and forcing her out. Cole’s shot deflected off the keeper and over to DeVolk, who took advantage of the open net.
In all the Scarlet Knights compiled 17 shots, with senior Amy Pietrangelo (Laval, Quebec, Canada) leading the way with three. Tiernan (four), Scholz (three) and DeVolk (three) each compiled multi-point games, while Cole finished with an assist.
Freshmen goalkeepers Casey Murphy (Bridgewater, N.J.) and Brianna Scarola (Chester, N.J.) both saw time in net and made two saves apiece.
The Scarlet Knights kick off their inaugural Big Ten Conference campaign on Friday, Aug. 22 at Yurcak Field against visiting Stony Brook.
