PISCATAWAY, N.J. (August 13, 2014) – The Rutgers women’s soccer team defeated No. 12 West Virginia, 4-2, Tuesday afternoon at Yurcak Field in its first scrimmage of the preseason.
Four different Scarlet Knights scored for Rutgers in the opening half, including seniors Stef Scholz (South Hackensack, N.J.) and Amy Pietrangelo (Laval, Quebec, Canada) and sophomores Jessica Puchalski (South Brunswick, N.J.) and Ali Ryan (Bowie, Md.).
“West Virginia is a very good team and very well coached. We knew we had to come out today and be organized and disciplined to the details and I think we accomplished that,” said head coach Mike O’Neill. “One of the things we also wanted to look for was our willingness and courage to keep the ball – possession. Just coming out of preseason we did a pretty good job of that.”
Scholz got things going on a breakaway in the third minute, shifting by the keeper and burying the ball into an open net.
Pietrangelo later got loose in the middle of the box in the 15th minute, making room for a right-footed finish to give the Scarlet Knights a 2-1 lead following a West Virginia equalizer.
A pair of sophomores closed the scoring for RU in the half, beginning with Puchalski in the 27th minute. Junior Rachel Cole (Teaneck, N.J.) charged at the WVU keeper just outside the box, drawing her out and forcing a deflection that bounced forward toward net. Puchalski followed the play, tapping the ball in net for a 3-1 RU lead.
Ryan finished off the RU scoring in style in the 40th minute, receiving a deep cross from Puchalski in front of the net and heading it in to beat the keeper right.
RU jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first half before conceding a goal midway through the second to lead to the final, 4-2.
RU will take on Villanova on Saturday, Aug. 16 in its final scrimmage of the preseason. 2014 marks the first time in Rutgers’ 30-year history that it will not face Villanova in regular season action.
The Scarlet Knights kick off their inaugural Big Ten Conference campaign on Friday, Aug. 22 at Yurcak Field against visiting Stony Brook.
